  • About the Edition

Abundance and size of cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarki was measured in thirteen small, less than 50 hectare, Southeast Alaska lakes. Each lake was sampled for three days in 1993. Catches of cutthroat trout varied widely in the lakes even though the same gear and similar effort were expended on each lake. Lengths of cutthroat trout generally fell into one of three ranges according to the following lake types: 1) lakes which support anadromous fish, 2) landlocked lakes without kokanee, and 3) landlocked lakes which have kokanee populations present. Mark-recapture experiments were conducted to estimate abundance of cutthroat trout 180 millimeters fork length in three of the small landlocked lakes in Southeast Alaska: Buck, Little Eva, and Upper Wolf lakes. Estimated abundance at Buck Lake was = 441, = 52; estimated abundance at Little Eva was = 380, = 28; and estimated abundance at Upper Wolf was = 1233, = 113.

Southeast Alaska that receive significant fishing effort for cutthroat trout, and therefore includes documented occurrence of the species in lakes across Southeast Alaska. This dataset is administered by the Trout Group of ADFG-SF, which is located in the Regional office (Douglas) of ADFG-SF, Southeast Region. 5. Alberta Cutthroat Trout Lakes. Alberta Canada offers several lakes that are perfect destinations to fish for Cutthroat Trout. Rawson Lake is located approximately km South West of the city of Calgary in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park Kananaskis Country. Rawson Lake has also been stocked with Cutthroat Trout and the population is regularly.

Cutthroat Trout Cutthroat trout are aggressive, as one might guess from their name and red slash mark under the jaw. Cutthroats range from lower Southeast Alaska to Prince William Sound in Southcentral. Landlocked cutthroats may reach 24 inches, and sea-run fish reach 18 inches. Adults have a vivid red slash mark under the jaw. The list of marine species includes some of the 'key' species that can be found within the Capital Regional District. This is by no means an exhaustive list.

Small fish in small streams are underappreciated. Most people want big fish in their pictures, but holding these small jewels of nature in your hand is often more than enough. The closest trout stream to me is a small stream with mostly small fish, but every once in while a much bigger one comes up that compared to the others looks just huge. Lahontan cutthroat trout populations in the Coyote Lakes basin are remnant of a larger and into Antelope Creek in (Hanson et al. ). Whether Lahontan cutthroat trout were present in these creeks prior to stocking activities is disputed Coyote Lake Lahontan cutthroat trout abundance has been estimated every five years since

The department recently resumed conducting cutthroat trout research to assess the current abundance and size composition of cutthroat trout in lakes of Southeast Alaska.

In the department conducted a mark-recapture study on Neck Lake on Prince of Wales Island. Fish were captured with baited traps and angling. Coastal cutthroat trout grow quite slowly, often taking 12 or more years to reach trophy size (3 pounds).

Maturity is reached at age 3–7, with males typically maturing earlier than females. Spawning occurs from April to early June and typically takes place over gravel beds in small isolated headwater streams, although they have been observed. The cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii) is a fish species of the family Salmonidae native to cold-water tributaries of the Pacific Ocean, Rocky Mountains, and Great Basin in North America, and is the state fish of a member of the genus Oncorhynchus, it is one of the Pacific trout, a group that includes the widely distributed rainbow trout.

Forty two cutthroat trout records currently exist, documenting their presence among 16 different stream systems within the park and preserve (however, only 55% of these records provide abundance information).

But in the small lakes and tumbling creeks that dot and cross the heavily forested southeastern coast of Alaska, the small, speckled trout of the Rockies yet thrives. A fun day of fly fishing in Southeast Alaska. The high water conditions didn't seem to hurt the fishing. If anything, I think it was better because of it.

Fly Fishing for Cutthroat Trout. Coastal cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii clarkii) are native trout subspecies found in the coastal streams of North America from the Eel River in northern California to south central Alaska.

They occupy small coastal streams, rivers, and lakes and are closely associated with the temperate rain forests of the Pacific Northwest. Small lures size (Mepps Black Fury, Vibrax chrome, bright colors for dark days, dark colors for bright days) Lake Trout. You guessed it, lake trout are found in lakes and are the largest trout here in Alaska.

They move based on water temperature, being inshore when the water is cold, and moving to deeper water as the summer progresses.

This spot, just north of Sterling, is primarily a boat launch, but it also offers excellent sockeye fishing. It’s located at the end of Bing’s Landing Road: There’s a parking lot, but when the fishing is hot, you can expect to park alongside the road, up to half a mile away from the boat launch site.

The distribution of coastal cutthroat trout is greater than for any other cutthroat trout subspecies. It extends along the Pacific coast of North America from the Eel River in northern California (DeWitt ) to the Prince William Sound area of southeast Alaska, bounded by Gore Point on the Kenai Peninsula (Sumner; DeWitt ; Scott and Crossman.

How to fish for Cutthroat Trout. The habitat range of Cutthroat Trout spans from Northern California to southern Alaska. In freshwater, they live in clear, cool water in coastal streams, pools and tributaries of small rivers. In the ocean, cutthroat feed and shelter in estuaries, tidal lagoons and marshes.

An anadromous coastal cutthroat from Washington State's Puget Sound. Introduction. The coastal cutthroat is a major subspecies of cutthroat trout that is native to the west coast of North America, for about 2, miles from the Eel River in northern California to the Prince William Sound in southern Alaska (See Map).

Statistics Coastal Cutthroat Oncorhynchus clarki clarki Other Names: sea-run cutthroat, harvest trout Average Size: lbs, up to 6 lbs Of the 13 subspecies of cutthroat trout indigenous to North America, only the coastal cutthroat is anadromous.

But coastal cutthroat have complex life histories, and not all fish are anadromous. In any given body of water, some may migrate. have described the “bewildering diversity” (Johnson et al.

) in size and age at migration, timing of migrations, age at maturity, and frequency of repeat spawning of coastal cutthroat trout in Washington (Blakley et al.Trotter ). Anadromous, or “sea-run” cutthroat, spawn in small streams, and the juveniles undergo. abundance and length composition of cutthroat trout (Rosenkranz et al.

Results from these studies were used to make initial recommendations about sampling cutthroat trout at Florence and other resident fish bearing lakes in Southeast Alaska. The objectives of. Cutthroat trout exhibit both resident and migratory life history strategies through much of their current range.

Resident forms complete their entire life cycle in the tributary streams in which they spawn and rear. Migratory cutthroat trout live in lakes, reservoirs, riv-ers, or the ocean and return to tributary streams to spawn.

Where they are found in large lakes, Cutthroats can grow to an impressive size of 20 to 30 inches and 5. coastal cutthroat trout have been recognized: Nonmigratory coastal cutthroat trout. This life history form includes fish generally found in small streams and headwater tributaries.

These non-migratory coastal cutthroat trout, in general, appear to grow more slowly than other life-history forms of trout, are smaller at maturity, and generally do. Other “Forms” of Cutthroat Trout in Alaska “Trophy” populations in resident lakes» 13 lakes in Southeast Alaska (SEAK)» Trout attain larger size (>20” and pounds)» Long-lived fish» Only found in lakes with abundant kokanee» Minimum size limit is 25” and 1 .The coastal cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii clarkii) also known as the sea-run cutthroat trout, blue-back trout or harvest trout is one of the several subspecies of cutthroat trout found in Western North America.

The coastal cutthroat trout occurs in four distinct forms. A semi-anadromous or sea-run form is the most well ater forms occur in both large and small .cutthroat trout abundances could be expected to be somewhat low due to competition for habitat). Abundance was measured in coastal cutthroat trout densities (fish/meter2) observed in surveys.

All available data were not thoroughly compiled and analyzed for this assessment. In.
